NYSC redeploys corps members from Borno, Kano, Yobe, others


The National Youth Service Corps on Thursday announced the redeployment of corps members from seven northern states. 

The affected states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano and Yobe states.

A statement on Thursday in Abuja by the Director of Public Relations in NYSC, Mrs. Bose Aderibigbe, said the decision followed the high rate of insecurity in some parts of the North. 

The corps members are part of the  2014 Batch 'B' Orientation Course  scheduled to commence next week Tuesday August 5, 2014. 

Ebola Virus- Two people isolated in Nigeria


The Federal Government has placed 69 persons, who had first contact with the Liberian-born victim of Ebola Virus, Patrick Sawyerr, on surveillance, while two persons have been quarantined (isolated), the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said.

Sawyer died in a Lagos hospital on Friday last week.

Chukwu debunked reports that the government had closed its borders, saying such move might not be taken "except when it becomes necessary."

Confusion over alfa arrested with placenta in Ilorin


The discovery of a baby placenta in the residence of a man, identified simply as Alfa Gani, is causing confusion in the Laduba community, Ogidi area of Ilorin, Kwara State.


Our correspondent gathered on Thursday that the discovery was made when some volunteers went round the Laduba community to appeal for financial contributions from residents for the repair of a faulty transformer in the area.

Mother arrested after baby is found on a lawn two days after she gave birth to it during her lunch break then returned to her office and pretended nothing happened

A court in the Polish city of Ilawa heard it was 'a miracle' the baby survived after being left in the field for two days as temperatures rose to over 30C.

Landlady’s children cut tenant’s private parts


A 35-year-old man, Yinka Offehin, is battling for his life at a private hospital in Lagos State after his scrotum was cut by the children of his landlady.


The Edo State indigene, who resides on Popoola Street, off Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of Lagos, was said to have been attacked while sleeping in his room with his family members.

His wife, Bisi, who was with him when the incident happened, identified the assailants as Solomon and Damilola, the children of the landlady

SUICIDE ATTACK: 10-year-old, 2 teenagers arrested with explosives in Kano

Coordinator of National Information Centre, Mr Mike says security forces stopped a car in Kano’s neighbouring state of Katsina today and arrested three suspected Boko Haram members.

The group included one male and two girls, aged 18 and 10.


The older two tried to flee, according to Omeri’s statement.

The “10-year-old … was discovered to have been strapped with an explosive belt,” he said.

Woman killed in Somalia for not wearing her Hijab



Militant Islamists in Somalia have shot dead a Muslim woman for refusing to wear a veil (Hijab), her relatives say.


The nomadic woman was killed outside her hut near the southern Somali town of Hosingow by gunmen belonging to the al-Shabab group, they added.

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, sacks two senior army officers after Boko Haram attacks

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has sacked two senior army officers at the forefront of the battle against militant Islamist group Boko Haram.

State radio did not give reasons for the dismissal of Col Youssa Gedeon and Lt-Col Justin Ngonga.

The decision probably reflects Biya’s growing concern about the Boko Haram threat, correspondents say.

Doctor who treated more than 100 Ebola patients dies from the virus


The Sierra Leonean doctor who treated more than 100 Ebola patients has also died. Dr Sheik Umar Khan (pictured above), who was hailed as a national hero for disregarding his own health and helping sick patients, died yesterday July 29th from the disease after being diagnosed with the virus last week. He contacted the virus despite wearing protective gear when treating patients.

16 die as troops rescue Cameroon’s Vice PM’s wife



The abducted wife of Cameroon’s Vice Prime Minister, Amadou Ali, has been rescued from her Boko Haram kidnappers.

The lady was kidnapped on Sunday, alongside a traditional ruler of Kolofata town in Cameroon.

The rescue operation was carried out by soldiers from Cameroon in an operation that was reported to have lasted several hours.

59 people had contacts with the Liberian who died of Ebola Virus in Lagos



The Lagos State Government said on Monday that it had identified no fewer than 59 people who had contacts with the Liberian who died of Ebola Virus in the state, Mr Patrick Sawyer.

Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, said at a news conference in Ikeja that the contact tracing became imperative to ascertain any possible transmission of the virus by the victim.

The reign of female suicide bombers


The Nigeria Police say a second explosion has rocked the ancient city of Kano.

The police announced the fresh explosion via its twitter handle.

The explosion came less than five hours after a blast tore through the Hotoro area of the city, killing no fewer than five persons.
